ABOUT THE DESIGN
David introduced Guru Adrian 40+ years ago, when Sydney’s headlines were full of dodgy mystics, Scientology, and Catholic Church scandals. The world seemed ready for a commonsensical, secular deity: a Saviour Self.
Adrian’s wise sayings, or Adrianisms – like Having Fun is Half the Fun – first appeared in Triple J’s zine Alan. Soon, Adrianists were everywhere, along with Guru Adrian posters, graffiti, T-shirts, stickers, badges, and Fun Credit Cards.
Before memes were memes, Guru Adrian became one: a cult figure for young non-conformists drawn to Adrianetics, his Philosophy of Fun.
David has often been asked when the Guru will rise again. Given everything going on, now feels like the time.
ABOUT THE MODEL
Simon Marnie has been a bestie of David's since they were the youngest employees of Triple J radio nearly five decades ago. Simon has since become a leading radio and TV presenter and a professional foodie. These photos were taken at Bill & Toni's in Darlinghurst, an old Triple J stomping ground, where the two still meet for coffee.
